Heather Smith, Between Sand and Surf (AERIAL 2026)

Bells Beach, Victoria. Practice day for the pro surf competition. I was photographing friends from the elevated viewing platform when a young surfer waited politely for me to finish, then headed down to the beach below. I only had my phone. One surfer. One board. A trail of footprints drawing a perfect line between untouched sand and the chaos of breaking waves. That quiet walk before paddling out into whatever comes next. Something about it feels universal, the gathering of thoughts before doing something that matters.
