Thomas Martin McShane, Wiencke Island (SEASCAPE 2025)

Whether a research assistant or a cruise passenger, many activities in Antarctica are necessarily a team sport, be it depending on others safety knowledge or simply their practical skills. In this instance, I was wholly reliant on an expertly skilled zodiac driver to navigate the frigid waters, dodge the plentiful icebergs and attempt to avoid soaking the camera equipment in order to get me to the vantage point I had identified. And really, that's where my challenge began... positioning and stabalising myself on a small rubber vessel being battered by continuous waves in order to frame and capture this image of Wiencke Island. I was mesmerised by the seeming dissection of the island revealing perfect layers of snow, rock and water, backed by a dramatic sky and topped of by a rookery of pebbling Gentoo penguins.
