Vanessa Haines, Ordinary (URBAN 2026)
This photo was taken in Omoide Yokocho Memory Land in Shinjuku Tokyo Japan, it's a famous street food alley way known for its amazing food, street venders and cherry blossom decorations. I have named this photograph ordinary because of my main subject matter, the toilet sign. something so ordinary, plain and universal pretty much everyone ignores it, in reality I believe people are always aware and know where these signs are, we all register them to some degree as to know what direction we need to go towards when the need for the toilet arises. but its one of those things that is so common and nearly everywhere that is more of a subconscious awareness. I found this sign so interesting from a compositions standpoint, something about how big and bright it was captured my attention, it made it a interesting photo for me as it captures something so ordinary and mundane in are prominent light. which is what I wanted to focus on in such a busy scene, highlighting the sign and making everything else fade was something I wanted to capture. In fact I love this photo so much when showing friends and family I refer to it as my toilet photo for some giggles.
