Michael Phelan, Fire and Ice: A Hamnōy Dream. (AERIAL 2024)

This photograph is the result of capturing 29 images using a telephoto lens. What sets it apart is not only the sharpness across every inch of the image but also a unique effect it achieves. This effect becomes apparent as one begins viewing the image from right to left. Initially, there was a slight amount of sunlight peaking through onto the mountains, which is rare for Hamnōy during winter. However, as I proceeded to capture the images from right to left, encompassing both upward and downward angles, there is a noticeable gradual transition in the lighting. This transition moves from warm tones indicative of sunlight to cooler tones. Hence, the title "Fire and Ice" aptly describes this phenomenon. Essentially, this image encapsulates a time-lapse within a single frame, presenting a remarkable and once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness such a sight.
