Sheila Peake, A step back in time (URBAN 2026)
In Albany, Western Australia, there are remnants of times past, such as old streetlamps, churches and red timber telephone boxes. When I first I saw this phone box I thought it was merely tourist decoration, a replica, a cerebration of the history of this town. But it was real, a fully functioning telephone box, and they were everywhere. No Telecom orange, plastic and steel in sight. A real 1960’s British red telephone box. It was a step back in time to my youth growing up in the UK with red phone boxes, bad weather. Or was it really the Dr Who Tardis transporting people through time and space? As I took the picture, the sky turned black as a massive storm swept in of the Southern Ocean. The dramatic sky emphasised the red of the phone box, reflecting in the polished metal top, making it seem more surreal than it already was. Almost the right weather to match the traditional British red telephone box, in its original home country. Sheila Peake spent 2025 travelling around Australia in her RV with husband and Rottweiler.
